warmest winter gear. feels like 9 degrees in washington. right now it's only 20 degrees in washington, just near 20 in prince georges county. still holding in the teens in parts of san fernando valley. eastern shore in the mid-20s. it's below freezing all around the region and we have considerable cloudiness as well. there's a little bit of sunshine to our south and down around the northern neck, but elsewhere it's been all cloudy. there is a little light snow coming into southern west virginia. that's southern virginia into north carolina. that is where the heaviest snow is going to fall from this storm. we do have a winter storm watch in effect for the counties farthest to the north. as far north as st. charles, culpepper counties, they are under a winter storm watch. we are right on the northern edge of this storm and things could change if that track does change. it could change dramatically, as a matter of fact. but for the rest of the day, cloudy and cold way bltery north wind. we'll take a look at the forecast for the end of the week and next week in just a few minutes. >> snow

begin with a developing story in northwest washington. the parkway has been re-opened after a couple of incents caused an ugly morning commute. they were apparently unrelated. first some smoking wires under the pennsylvania avenue bridge. the second a death investigation under the m street bridge. news4's there with more on all the problems this caused for commuters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, joe. look behind me. you can see traffic is once again flowing across this bridge that carries pennsylvania avenue over rock creek. we're in the 2700 block of pennsylvania avenue but utility crews remain on the scene trying to get to the source of the fire early this morning. there were two incidents here. while utility crews are dealing with that one, a short distance away police are dealing with the other. the morning's incident started out with a report of smoke along the rock creek parkway, starting on a bridge that carries pennsylvania avenue. >> as firefighters arrived on the scene they found pretty heavy smoke issuing from under neath the pennsylvania avenue bridge. did cal

was loud and exciting, a visionary and a pioneer. news4's megan mcgrath joins us live from the washington national cathedral where our friend and colleague is being remembered this morning. megan? >> reporter: good morning, barbara. everyone is basically moved into the cathedral right now. any moment now the memorial is going to begin. it is expected to be a very personal memorial. just a handful of speakers. a little while ago family members arrived herate at the cathedral, as well as some of his closest friends, among them joe gibbs and sonny jeen son and everyone here to play tribute to george michael and his legacy. george michael is a member of our news4 family for nearly 28, but he was so ch more than that. he was a huge innovator through his sports casts and his syndicated television show, "the sports machine," george changed the way local news was covered and he was just an innovator in that field. his use of game highlights from around the country revolutionized local sports reporting and he took it way beyond the coverage of just the local teams. he really stepped it up a notch.

to reaching a plea deal on gun charges? northwest washington where the meeting is takes place. >> reporter: good morning. the metro board has a very busy agenda today. they're going to be discussing the budget and fare hikes and it does appear that fare hikes are inevitable. they're also getting a new chairman, peter benjamin. benjamin announced a while ago he's asked the department of transportation to look at what metro's doing about safety and to offer recommendations. we are apparently having difficulty with that tape here but, a very, very full agenda for metro's board. a lot of interest in exactly what's going to happen with regard to the budget. metro is facing a $40 million budget shortfall and that's just for this year. they have to close that gap and one of the things that they are looking at, they are actually looking at a couple of different options, fare hikes as well as the possibility of kufting servi cutting service. peter benjamin will take over today as the chairman of metro's board. he takes the reins at a time of great challenge, both fiscal and operational. the investigation into tuesday's deadly accident that

afternoon, all the way overnight, and now it's just 29 in washington. upper 20s in prince george's, arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties, and all around the region, just below freezing. it's right near the freezing mark right now at quantico. they're at 32. elsewhere, we're under 30 degrees. these are the windchills they're down in the teens to near 10 degrees in a few locations. windchill in washington, now 17. that's with a wind gust of 29 miles per hour. the winds have increased a little bit from earlier this morning. we've had gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour. out of the mountains, temperatures only in the teens right now. their windchills are down to near zero. and the snow showers that we have seen crossing the appalachians and move into west virginia have begano reach parts of the shenandoah valley and the panhandle of west virginia, a few passing snow showers there. the rest of the day, partly sunny, maybe a flurry or passing snow shower. highs only reaching the freezing mark. and this cold weather is going to be around for the rest of the week and into next weekend. deta

, 30 in washington, montgomery, prince george's, arlington, and fairfax county. above freezing all around the region and in the mountains as well. in the mid-30s there, eastern shore, near 40 degrees. low 40s through southern virginia. into the carolinas, there's some mild air there. they're in the 50s. we have breaks in the clouds just to the north of washington, getting some sunshine breaking out. northern montgomery county into frederick county and across much of north central maryland. and we'll begin to see some of this drier air pushing in. we'll see these clouds breaking up this afternoon, partly cloudy much of the region, but remaining mostly cloudy through the south of washington. its highs peak in the mid-40s. and wind around 5 to 10. a wintry mix beginning tomorrow moving into the region. i'll have details on that. we'll take a look at the forecast into the weekend as well in just a few minutes. barbara? >> all right, tom. thank you. we have steve hirschhorn watching the roads for us at this hour. let's go to him now and see how things are moving at midday. steve? >> we'

. as we look at the temperatures now, just getting to near the freezing mark. 33 in washington at reagan national airport. elsewhere, it's right around 30 degrees. and we have the sunshine that has increased after the morning cloudiness and a few passing flurries. right now windchills are in the upper teens to around 20 degrees. so the winds are not as blustery. these are the current wind gusts. we've seen gusts to around 20 to 25 miles an hour and that's going to be the story for the rest of the afternoon. it's cold out in the mountains, again, there, still subfreezing and down into the teens. they started off this morning just near 10 degrees. now it's in the upper teens there and near 30 on the eastern shore. over the last six hours, we've seen the cloud cover breaking up and we'll have quite a bit of sunshine throughout the rest of the afternoon, but a few clouds racing through may produce a few passing flurries. highs just reaching the mid-30s and the northwest winds gusting around 10 to 25 miles an hour. could get a few more flurries overnight tonight. we'll talk about that and loo

washington with the latest. kimberly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. news 4 was first to tell you about this. lasted friday night, subpoenas were delivered to two local stylists, celebrity stylists, who serviced the salahis the night of the state dinner. we're here in front of the federal courthouse. those two stylists due in mine here. we're expecting them to show up around 11:15 a.m. this morning in their limousine. take a look at erwin gomez. he likes to called a celebrity makeup artist. and also, peggy iocom, she's referred to as a hair artist. they're both called to testify before a federal grand jury that's convened to investigate how michaele and tareq salahi got into the white house and whether or not they lied to government officials. the salahis, we understand, spent six hours in the irwin/gomez salahi and paid almost $250, not with a credit card, but numbers written down on a piece of paper. but they did pay, received hair, makeup, a lot of that time was taken up by the bravo film crews that accompanied them. you can imagine how much discussed about the upcoming st

and east southeast of washington. quite a bit of sunshine shenandoah valley through the rest of virginia. all this associated with some cold, dry air that is continuing to me in from the midwest, the area of low pressure that gave us the snow this morning is now moving off to our north and east. as we go forward over the next 48 hours, we'll see that low pressure exiting and high pressure build in from the midwest, will bring in another surge of frigid, arctic air that is going to be moving in and it will be in place for the weekend, but it should be dry. so, here's how we're looking for the rest of this friday. we'll have those blustery, cold-cutting winds out of the northwest, gusting 30 to 35 miles an hour, with some clouds racing through from time to time and highs only reaching near the freezing mark. then overnight tonight, back down into the mid-20s by midevening and then the teens tomorrow morning. and the winds will diminish tomorrow, thankfully, because highs only in the upper 20s tomorrow. we'll have a few clouds around then. lots of sun on sunday. a clear and coldtart sunday

news out of northwest washington, where crews are trying to fix a broken water main. it broke earlier thimorning at 17th and pea streets northwest in the dupont circle area. and that's where megan mcgrath is right now. she joins us live with the very latest. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning. i'm going to step out of the way here so you can take a live look at the area where the water is coming from there. you can see that's the location of the water main break. we're told it's a 20-inch water main, basically, right here near the intersection of "p" and 17th street. it's actually on 17th here. and it's been gurgling for quite some time. been going on since a little before 9:00 this morning. you can see that the water is still coming from the pavement. they have, kind of, shut it down a little bit here, while it's still coming out. it's nothing like what it was earlier this morning when this first happened. we have some eyewitness accounts of folks that say the water was actually shooting about 20 feet up into the air when it first occurred. a 20-inch water main, so this i
